5, 2016. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh) (Susan Walsh) DETROIT — President Barack Obama recorded an interview with Detroit’s WJLB on Wednesday as part of a series of radio spots focused on voter turnout. Obama urged voters to show up at the polls in November during Wednesday’s Bushman On Air broadcast. Butbefore that, he brought up Detroit’s resurgence. “Detroit is starting to come back,” Obama said. “Part of that is us saving the auto industry and we’ve really been able to, I think, see the beginnings of redevelopment in ways that had made a real difference in the lives of people.” He touted the nationwide decline in unemployment rates. “We’vebeen able tocut the poverty rate by more than any time since 1968,” the president said. The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 11. “All of that progress goes out the window if we don’t make the right choice in this election,” Obama said.”The key thing we need right now is to make sure peopleare registered to vote.” Detroit’s comeback efforts have been in the national spotlight and under federal scrutiny in recent years after a government bailout of automakers led to a resurgence in that industry, and a bankruptcy filing by thecity cleared the way for debt relief and new investment.
